SAFE STOP SYSTEMS

Hydraulic Safety Systems –
designed and manufactured by FPS.

Complete, customisable, safety systems for safer operating environments.

Hydraulic systems are integral to the performance of many operating environments where there is motion and control used to manipulate mechanical components and systems.

This precise hydraulic regulation and control of systems can now be leveraged to provide safety measures that significantly increase operational safety – to a level not yet seen by industry.

The accredited FPS SAFE STOP Safety System - designed, developed, and manufactured by FPS in Nelson, New Zealand, provides proactive and reactive integrated safety systems that safeguard people like never before.

  • With the SAFE STOP system, you can limit user error and protect staff with mechanically automated hydraulic stop valves and complementary (or independent) safety modules, built into a customised system, integrated into the hydraulics and components that drive your factory, machinery or work boat.

  • With this system, you have more control over safety on your vessel or in your factory, or anywhere where machinery is driven by hydraulic componentry. And more control means more safety.

  • Developed initially for the marine industry by FPS’ industry leading hydraulic engineers, using one-of-a-kind, tested and accredited FPS marine-grade hydraulic engineering technology, these modules and valves can be built into a customised SAFE STOP safety system and integrated into your existing or new system, depending on your safety needs.

  • Designed initially and manufactured in stainless steel for reliability in the harsh marine environment, to protect New Zealand marine farmers and factory workers from harm, this safeguarding system is also manufactured in standard materials for below deck install and will work with any other systems driven by hydraulics such as sawmills, food factories, and many more.

How does it work?

Work with our leading hydraulic design engineers to design a safety system from the wide range of modules that make up the SAFE STOP system – one that works for your operating environment. These designs are customised based on your safety needs and operating system and then integrated into your existing or new system.

SAFE stop sAFETY MODULES

Hydraulic Position-Sensing Stop Valve Module

Automated stop valves that shut down the system when risk is identified.

While most emergency stop functions are only reactive – often after harm has occurred, SAFE STOP’s Hydraulic Position-Sensing Stop Valves offer a proactive safety measure for your people.

This module has dual modular redundancy, so if one valve fails the other one will trigger the shut down.

  • The valves have been designed to prevent injuries from machinery, by automatically shutting down equipment when access panels are opened, or guards removed for example.

These valves are standalone components and can be used across an impressive range of applications as a proactive safety measure that limits human error – the hardest element of safety to manage.

For example, if an operator opens a hatch, it triggers an automatic hydraulic response and stops the machine. On integration into your system, you choose what this valve shuts down - the machine being used, a particular group of machinery (zone), or the whole boat, factory floor, or sawmill.

Complementary to the SAFE STOP Hydraulic Position-Sensing Stop Valve, you can add in global or localised modules that further enhance or add to the safety of these valves operation - creating an entire system that specifically meets your safety needs.

This module has dual modular redundancy, so if one valve fails the other one will trigger the shut down.

Emergency Stop Modules

Do you want significantly higher levels of safety than standard e-stops (emergency stops), or maybe an e-stop designed for the marine environment?

Unlike traditional emergency stop options, SAFE STOP Emergency Stop Modules are linked to the hydraulic system to offer a higher level of safety to electrical or other models of e-stops.

  • Like electronic stop systems, these add extra protection where and if you need it.

Unlike traditional emergency stop options, SAFE STOP Emergency Stop Modules are linked to the hydraulic system to offer a higher level of safety to electrical or other models of e-stops.

Electric e-stops can be unreliable in a marine or wet environment. This manually operated hydraulic e-stop valve can work in conjunction with the electric e-stop switches if required.

You can shut down what you choose to with these modules. Located in key places within your operating environment they can shut down the whole factory floor, all deck gear or just one piece of machinery. On a deep-sea fishing boat for example, the Emergency Stop module can shut down the whole boat, factory, designated zone that system aligns with and the prime mover (electric motor or engine) too if required.

Say, it shuts down the engine. If, upon starting up again there is something left turned on (such as a winch), the operator will be able to start the engine but won’t be able to reset the system until the winch control is turned off with the help of some of the modules below. This helps avoid something re-starting when staff are unprepared, such as that winch – further adding to operational safety.

RESET Modules

With the SAFE STOP Reset Module, users cannot start the system if it isn’t safe to do so. This is an important part of the overall safety system and can also be used in isolation of all other modules if required.

  • Paired with the Hydraulic Position-Sensing Stop Valve Module or the Emergency Stop Module, the Reset Module controls the restart of the system, machinery or set of operating systems (zone) it controls.

If a system that has been shut down or forced to stop (for example a production line in a factory) isn’t safe to restart because machinery controls have been left in the run/on position, or a guard has not been closed for example, then the whole system or the associated zone cannot be reset until all machinery controls are in the off position and it is safe to restart.

This Reset Module makes sure that when machinery restarts, it is safe to do so and doesn’t catch operators unaware.

REDUCER Modules

Managing the pressure in your safety system.

The Reducer Module supplies the reduced pressure to operate the SAFE STOP system - an integral part of most systems. Although in some cases, FPS can use the pressure from another area in the system, for example the pressure from components already in use.

SENSING Modules

Working with the Reset Module to sense if it is safe to start. As part of the SAFE STOP safety systems design, various sensing modules are integrated to pick up signals from the different types of stop/start control valves that operate the system.

  • We have different sensing modules for different types of control valves. These could be for manual, electric, or hydraulic remote-controlled valves for example.

These work alongside the Reset Module. They help make sure nothing will start unless everything is isolated, ensuring that if a piece of machinery still in operation when the system shuts down won’t restart when the system does. This helps ensure the whole operating environment is safe before you start up again after an emergency stop, engine failure, opened cover/guard, etc. Essentially, any uncontrolled shut down.

ISOLATING Modules

Don't allow a forced re-start. These are the communicators in the system that won’t open unless it is safe to do so.

These isolate the main system, complete, or individual zones and are integrated into all systems where they are needed. These are the communicators and won’t open unless it is safe to do so. They are controlled by the Reset Module and could be anywhere within your system - every zone would have one of these modules. This module has dual modular redundancy, so if one valve fails the other one will shut the system down.

a SAFESTOP Control System

Within your safety system, you can add a SAFESTOP Control System so you can manually stop and start components from one location if it is safe to do so. With the reset and sensing modules, you will be able to tell if this is the case or not.

FPS manufactures for reliability and longevity. The complete system can be stainless steel and fully sealed, while also being designed to be easy to maintain. Or, if you do not need components marinised, standard componentry is used to build your system.
